IVVCC International Gordon Bennett 2014    6th, 7th and 8th June 2014

2014 Rally Results are here.

Friday the 6th June saw the start of this year's IVVCC International Gordon Bennett Rally which was also the 111th anniversary of the first Gordon Bennett Rally held in Ireland in 1903. The event began in Carlow with a large number of participants meeting up for the Friday get together lunch. Following a splendid lunch reception in the Seven Oaks Hotel participants began their journey to the Killashee Hotel, Naas, Co. Kildare, our base for the weekend. We enjoyed a welcoming drinks reception, sponsored by Bonhams, followed by a Barbeque and a night of music. The event was organised with the committee's usual imaginative touch and attention to detail ensuring an excellent event for all those taking part. Over 150 cars took part in this year's rally. Along with cars from North and South of the border we also had a large UK contingent and many thanks to all participants especially those that travelled from abroad. Thanks to excellent planning on the part of the organising committee and a lot of luck with weather the rally was a huge success. A good time was had by all who attended.
The main event, "The IVVCC International Gordon Bennett Rally", was held on Saturday. It was a pleasant drive over a very well planned and interesting route. Following on from last year's great success of the introduction of electronic timing this year's rally was again timed using electronic timing carried out by an independent event timing company. This system proved very popular among participants as they could view results on the display screen as cars returned.
After a truly great day with many humourous stories to be told, the Gala Dinner and Prize giving ceremony took place. Our congratulations go to Tom Callanan and his navigator in their 1924 Vauxhall 30/98, the overall event winners and recipients of the Gordon Bennett Trophy award.

On Sunday morning there was a trip to Russborough House followed by a number of very entertaining car trials held in the grounds of the Killashee Hotel. The rally drew to close over an enjoyable farewell lunch.
We look forward to seeing all participants return next year for what we hope will be an equally successful and enjoyable event.

Friday the 7th June saw the start of this year's IVVCC International Gordon Bennett Rally which was also the 110th anniversary of the first Gordon Bennett Rally held in Ireland in 1903. The organising committee went to great lengths to ensure an excellent event for all those taking part. Over 150 cars took part. Along with cars from North and South of the border and a large UK contingent, we also had entrants from Germany, New Zealand and South Africa. Thanks to excellent planning on the part of the organising committee and brilliant sunshine throughout, the rally was a huge success. A good time was had by all who attended.
The event began in Carlow to the delight of the very many spectators who had gathered to view the cars. Participants were welcomed to Carlow by the Mayor of Carlow who wished them a very enjoyable weekend. Following a splendid lunch reception in the Seven Oaks Hotel participants began their journey to the Killashee Hotel, Naas, Co. Kildare, our base for the weekend. Participants later enjoyed a welcoming drinks reception, sponsored by Bonhams, followed by a Barbeque and a night of music.
The main event, "The IVVCC International Gordon Bennett Rally", began on Saturday morning at the Killashee Hotel and finished there later that evening. Large numbers of spectators were present to see each car as they set off to compete in the rally.
For the first time ever in the history of this event the regularity stages were timed electronically. The timing was carried out by an independent event timing company. This new system proved very popular among participants and within minutes of completing their run each participant was given details of their times over every stage.
Following on from what was a truly great day with many humourous stories to be told, the Gala Dinner and Prize giving ceremony took place later that evening. Our congratulations go to Brendan Fox and his navigator Katie Ryan in their 1930 Vauxhall golfers coupe who were the overall event winners and recipients of the Gordon Bennett Trophy award.

IVVCC INTERNATIONAL GORDON BENNETT 2012

Friday 8th June was possibly one of the wettest days of the year but this didn't stop a large number of IVVCC members and visitors from attending the start of our premier event in Motor Distributors Limited. After a lunch hosted by our main sponsors Mercedes Benz and a guided tour of their wonderful collection of cars by Denis Dowdall, the cars made their way to the rally headquarters in the Kilashee House Hotel in Naas.
The following morning, Mother Nature took pity on the assembled collection of nearly one hundred and eighty pre1931 cars with a dry and sunny day for their return trip to Tullamore.

Irish Vintage Scene editor Tom Heavey found himself in unfamiliar territory as he climbed aboard car number one, John Boland's 10hp 1902 Renault type N, with Tom Farrell, president of the IVVCC and Johnís son Kevin for the 110 mile trip. Judging from the amount of laughter heard coming from this little car, the general consensus was that a good time was had by all. Other cars taking part included a large number of overseas entries including an original Dublin registered 1912 Wolseley 16/20 Laundaulette, which was making the trip home for the first time in many years.

The day went very well and the routes were perfect for driving. Whether you were a serious contender for the Gordon Bennett trophy or just enjoying the drive. A new aspect to the event was a number of driving tests as you arrived for lunch and these are proving very popular with drivers and look like becoming a regular feature on our events.

The highlight of the Saturday night banquet is the prize giving and all eyes were on the Gordon Bennett trophy to see who had secured the much sought after title of overall winner. This year the honour went to a man who had travelled a very long way to attend the event. Nicholas Bailey in his 1912 Ford Model T all the way from Australia!

Sunday morning saw the cars heading off to Burtown House for a relaxing chat in the beautiful gardens of this house which has only recently been opened to the public, followed by a farewell lunch back in the Kilashee House Hotel. Great credit is due to the organising committee for all their hard work in making this event so successful and next year will be the one hundredth and tenth anniversary of the Gordon Bennett which was the first road race in the British Isles and we look forward to another large turnout.
